Wine Review & Competition: Original Sliced Gluhwein

glu_prod_backIt’s Winter and it’s time for Gluhwein, just ask any South African. Winter means the sun’s out on the coastline and you start unpacking your “Winter” wear from the cupboards. By the way “winter wear” consists of long sleeved shirts, paired with some- tights. And in some cases a rain coat if its raining, aka serious business. Lol.

Although the adventurous type, do race up to Climb Sani Pass, while the Lesotho Mountains are covered in snow and offering -8 temps over night. There are wood fires to be had along Nottingham Road in the Midlands Meander to suit everyone. The Old Notties Hotel has a history like none other, having stayed there myself I must admit they serve a mean cheese platter for 2 and some lovely ale in their Bar, all while feeding you a hot wood fire and great music.

Another venue to appreciate the smell of a wood fire and sip on some comfort is the Granny Mouse, Country House and Spa Resort, also along Nottingham Road. Their Mouse and Lion Bar, is a great place to engage with friends during the afternoon or even the Cigar Bar. To be honest this is one of my favorite properties in the Midlands. I seriously suggest spending an evening in one of their Deluxe Suites, in front of a wood fire while enjoying your Gluhwein. Please note a corkage will be charged for byob.

Gluhwein can be served as a hot or cold drink. I personally enjoy the Original Sliced as a hot drink. I feel that the infused flavors come out a lot better on the palette and the smell is undeniably comforting. Nothing like holding a hot cup of Gluhwein while sitting around a fire.

For those of you wondering, what is Gluhwein? Gluhwein is what they call a Mulled Wine. It’s a combination of Red wine and various spices and raisins. A rather popular drink globally during the Winter season and the Christmas Season. As far as we are concerned in South Africa, Gluhwein isn’t Gluhwein unless it has been made with Cinnamon Sticks, Oranges, Cloves and Sugar.

And so, if you’re sitting at home in SA and you haven’t got a bottle or box of Gluhwein the cupboard, quickly get up and go fourth to the bottle store 🙂

If you’re in South Africa and haven’t tried the Original Sliced Version, then it’s your lucky week.

I am giving away a set of the Original Sliced Gluhwein Range. This includes 1 X 750ml Bottle and 1 X Box of Original Sliced Gluhwein as pictured in the first image.
