Virgin Active Launch – Pavilion

Set against a backdrop of dazzling city lights in the heart of the Pavillion shopping centre, Durban’s top social media influencers gathered for an evening of premium entertainment, tech and food, topped with a healthy dose of fitness. Incorporating the launch of the Virgin Active at Pav, along with an Instameet and networking event for Tweeters and Grammers resulted in an all-in-one super event, displaying the future of marketing and event structure.


On entering the venue, situated in the very new, VERY shiny gym, we were welcomed with drinks provided by Skyy Vodka. The atmosphere was lively and buzzing as Durban’s social media elite mingled with celebrities. A witty Nesan Pather served as a witty MC, keeping the energy going throughout the night.

Among the vendors in attendance was tech giant Samsung serving VR realness, Kiehl’s natural inspired premium skin care, La Vita Spas and Wicked Donuts.  Kauai, a sustainability-conscious GMO/additive free, all round good stuff restaurant chain provided amazing snacks and smoothies for the evening. The food was delicious, and also had the required nutrients to ease even the most health conscious mind. Providing samples of healthy, high protein snacks and foods was My Body Guru, an online supplement store. Catering for the female gymer was makeup brand Bobbi Brown, offering drip-free make-up solutions for working out.


As guests enjoyed their treats (completely guilt free considering it was all so healthy!) and soaked in the amazing view, we were treated to a guided tour of the very premium, state-of-the-art gym and the facilities in all its glory. The tour was live streamed and tweeted by many in attendance, bringing to light the very modern approach to marketing being ushered in.


In the age of live streaming, South Africa is tapping into the ever evolving market, with hosts Virgin Active and I Love Durban being on the forefront of the trend. Expect to see this being emphasised by event coordinators and marketers alike, as this is the projected trend of future launches and events.

The evening was concluded with lucky draws, with guests randomly winning epic prizes from Chateau Gateaux, Pavillion Shopping Centre and more. Most notable win of the night was Yovanie Ganesh, winning most active influencer of the event, receiving a giant hamper from My Body Guru. All in attendance left happy with an awesome VA goody bag, filled with treats from the various sponsors of the night. The festivities continued long after the event had ended, with tweets and posts of highlights of the night circulating on social media.
